Students will need to purchase small solar panels and utilize data loggers to measure the amount of electrical current produced over time using the variables of spectrum and filters to simulate the global warming issue. Relating to air pollution and cloud cover on surface heating.
In this investigation, students will take a live sample of bacteria (algae) found in water samples. Some bacteria is healthy but too much will lead to eutrophic water bodies. Your investigation will observe the growth of algae within a controlled body of water using an independent variable such as pH, temperature, UV spectrum, salinity or nutrient content. Students may study the dissolved oxygen over time or turbidity over time. A proper discussion will include the extension into Hong Kong water pollution.
Students participating in this investigation will research particulate matter investigate the amount of particulate matter in the air at certain locations. Students may hypothesis the areas that have the most or least particulate matter. Students will measure the air particulate matter using either petri dishes with Vaseline medium or use the vacuum boxes. Each method will allow for the measurement of particulate matter. Students will need to measure another variable that they assume will be the cause of the particulate matter and controlling external variables such as weather. Students can also compare their data to the Hong Kong observatories secondary data in their discussion.
You will be provided with your choice of variables to measure the effects of acid deposition on man-made and natural materials. The materials, application method, type of acid and concentration of acid choices are all up to you. Remember that you need to apply your data to the real world in the discussion so make sure that your choices are relevant. Make a list of the materials and acids that you require and pass this list to me on January 6th. You will be marked on all 4 of the criteria. (PL,DCP,DEC,PS) Check Managebac for uploading.
You will be required to observe the difference in air quality between 5 different sites on campus. When placing your samples, remember to think of places that would have different external factors to create differences. Also, remember to mark your samples so that people don't move them. Data collection will continue until Christmas holiday for my class (possibly after christmas holidays for Ms. Brock's class). You will have two different methods of data collection. The first is using the light intensity meter to gauge the change in transparency of the disc. You will also have the ability to dissolve the Vaseline medium and use the turbidity meter. My class, the due date is on Managebac. You will be marked on all 4 of the criteria. (PL,DCP,DEC,PS) Check Managebac for uploading.
Students undertaking this investigation will be required to attend a sampan trip in Aberdeen harbour. Students will draw water samples and measure the dissolved oxygen and BOD as well as a variety of other variables to determine the pollution levels of the water. Students will have the opportunity for a very strong data analysis component.
The RQ needs to relate to the oxygen production of Elodea pond weed in a water solution (or just water). You needed to look for a relationship between limiting factors and the production of oxygen bubbles. You must process the data effectively and create graphs to present your information. Complete the discussion, evaluation and conclusion of the lab. You will me marked on all 4 criteria (PL, DCP, DEC, PS)..
You will need to observe the macro-invertebrates found in a sample O-horizon of soil in order to study types found and the role they play in the breakdown of leaf litter and waste. The DCP and DEC criteria will be assessed for this and it will count towards your end of year mark. Although the planning section has been done already, please write the planning section. Remember to be concise in your Research question. The method involved will need to be researched. Here's a clue, "Tulgreen Funnel" with 70% Ethanol.
DUE DATE: JUNE 7th - The upload link has been sent to you via email. DCP Data: You should already have drawn copies of the specimens. Analysis: Simply research and state the macro invertebrates found. Presentation: Demonstrate an understanding of the macro invertebrates found in the soil sample collected. DEC Discussion: Discuss the role of macro invertebrates in a broad range of soil (Generally!!) Evaluation: What could have been done better, more effectively, more accurately?.... Conclusion: How does our soil compare to what a healthy soil should be? What macro invertebrates were found compared to ones that should be? |
