Solutions for Sustainable Farming
Soil fertility should be maintained by utilising wastes and by harnessing natural cycles.
Organic matter should be replenished by ploughing in crop residues and by using animal manure and legumes.
Over-reliance on mechanisation should be avoided or fossil fuel use should be lessened.
Labour-intensive agriculture could reduce unemployment.
Populations of herbivores should be maintained within the carrying capacity of the ecosystem and prevent the loss of woodlands.
Biodiversity must be maintained.
Crop rotations could be practiced more to reduce soil degradation.
Strip farming, growing trees and crops together would improve soil fertility and provide harvests more regularly.
